We are reporting one case of hepatitis A linked to a multi-state outbreak of hepatitis A being investigated in collaboration with the Nevada State Health Division, the CDC, and the FDA. We investigated a potential exposure to a rabid bat found in a yard of a Las Vegas home. Although the majority of bats are healthy and good for the environment, a small number are infected with the rabies virus and people should avoid contact with them. Read the full release for details. May is Hepatitis Awareness Month. Are you at risk? Recently, the CDC recommended hepatitis C testing for people born between 1945 and 1965 and estimates that one in 30 baby boomers is infected with hepatitis C. Most are not aware of their infection. Read the full release for details. May 14, 2013

A special outreach event called Street Teen Outreach Day is scheduled from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., Saturday, May 4, at the Shannon West Homeless Youth Center, 1417 N. This Sunday, March 24, is World TB Day, the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced he identified M. tuberculosis, the bacteria responsible for one of the world’s most dreaded diseases. Today, tuberculosis affects approximately two billion people worldwide. In 2012, there were 70 cases in Clark County and a total of 85 reported throughout the state. The Passport to Immunizations and Health Fair will be held, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Saturday, April 20 at our main public health center, 330 S. Valley View Blvd., at the corner of Meadows Lane. This free event will offer no cost childhood immunizations for eligible children up to age 36 months, health screenings, family resources, and well-baby checks on a first come-first served basis. We are offering quarterly immunization clinics at the Laughlin Public Health Center. At each quarterly clinic, Laughlin residents can receive all childhood vaccines for babies, pre-schoolers, pre-teens and adolescents as well as adult immunizations such as Tdap, pneumonia or flu shots.
