Have you gotten your flu shot?

The holidays are quickly approaching. Have you had a flu shot yet? The Southern Nevada Health District encourages everyone to protect themselves and their loved ones during the holiday season by getting a flu immunization. National Influenza Vaccination Week, Dec. 8-14, is an opportunity to remind people that flu vaccines are beneficial and effective even if they are received in December and January. Southern Nevada Health District Outbreak Investigation

Based on the results of positive laboratory testing, the Southern Nevada Health District has confirmed the illnesses it is currently investigating among a group of attendees of the National Youth Football Championship event as norovirus. As part of this type of investigation the health district often obtains appropriate samples in an effort to confirm the cause of the illness. Norovirus is common and can spread easily through person to person contact. It can also be difficult to eliminate.

Health District commemorates World AIDS Day, Dec. 1

The annual World AIDS Day is Sun., Dec. 1. In commemoration, the Southern Nevada Health District and its community partners will observe the occasion with free testing at several locations on Mon. The theme for World AIDS Day is “Getting to Zero:” zero new HIV infections, zero AIDS-related deaths and zero discrimination affecting people with HIV and/or AIDS.

The Great American Smokeout, Nov. 21

The Great American Smokeout debuted in 1976 as an opportunity for smokers to give up the habit for just one day with hope the decision would lead to a permanent change. This year, the American Cancer Society has designated Thursday, Nov. 21 as the Great American Smokeout. The Southern Nevada Health District encourages smokers in the community to participate and to commit to a long-term plan to quit for good.

November is National Diabetes Month

November is National Diabetes Month and diabetes is one of the most prevalent diseases in the United States. The American Diabetes Association reports that approximately 7 million of the nearly 26 million Americans with diabetes are undiagnosed.

Check your stocks as you reset your clocks, Nov. 3

The switch back to Standard Time this Sunday, Nov. 3, is the perfect opportunity for Southern Nevadans to check their family emergency stockpiles, change batteries in radios, replace expired food items, rotate items in the kit, update family information, or determine if there are any items that are missing. The Southern Nevada Health District has information about emergency preparedness as well as a calendar to help develop a family kit on its website, www.SNHD.info.

The Get Healthy Holiday Challenge registration is open

The holiday season is almost here and that means— temptation! From the parties to the shopping, it’s easy to take a break from healthy habits. Registration is open for the Southern Nevada Health District’s Get Healthy Holiday Challenge. The Challenge will help participants stay healthy during the holidays.

Southern Nevada Health District tuberculosis investigation

The Southern Nevada Health District is currently investigating a tuberculosis exposure that occurred via a patient within Summerlin Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit this past summer. Hospital management and staff have fully cooperated with every step of the investigation and continue to partner with the health district to respond to this incident.

Health District to offer flu shots, Sept. 23

This flu season the Southern Nevada Health District offers the newly available quadrivalent influenza vaccine, which protects against four strains of the flu. Health district clinics will begin at 8 a.m., Monday, Sept. 23. This is the first time the health district will offer the four-strain vaccine and it is the only type of vaccine that will be available for adults.

Health District, Nevada Goes Fall Free Coalition designate Sept. 22-28 Fall Prevention Awareness Week

The Southern Nevada Health District and its Nevada Goes Fall Free Coalition partners have designated Sept. 22-28 as Fall Prevention Awareness Week to coincide with National Fall Prevention Awareness Day, Sun., Sept. 22. The health district and its partners will offer free senior fall risk assessments at several locations throughout the week.

An emergency preparedness kit is a first step to ensure families and businesses can sustain themselves in the event of an illness outbreak or a natural disaster. Health District offers Certified Food Safety Manager Card

The Southern Nevada Health District will offer an enhancement of its food safety training program with the introduction of a Certified Food Safety Manager Card. The new card is optional and offers food safety professionals with additional training and education. The new card is $20; however, training and certification costs will vary depending upon which program applicants utilize. For information, visit the health district website, www.SNHD.info. The Certified Food Safety Manager card will be available Tuesday, Sept. 3.

Coleman withdraws CHO application

The Southern Nevada Health District’s Director of Community Health, Dr. Thomas R. Coleman, has withdrawn his application for consideration for the position of the chief health officer due to personal family matters.

Health District reports additional West Nile case

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting an additional case of West Nile illness in an adult, over the age of 50 who is hospitalized with the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness. This is the fifth case reported in Clark County in 2013. In addition, West Nile positive mosquitoes have been detected in the 89122 zip code.
