The Southern Nevada Health District’s Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) are hosting a free 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Family Fun Walk Saturday, Feb. 9 to promote the department’s updated physical activity guidelines for children and adults and to launch its new Move Your Way campaign and website.

The Southern Nevada Health District, Alliance Against Diabetes, Visión y Compromiso host the annual Celebrating Your Health event, March 23

As part of Diabetes Alert Month, the Southern Nevada Health District, the Alliance Against Diabetes/Unión Contra la Diabetes, Visión y Compromiso, and other community partners are hosting the annual Celebrating Your Health/Celebrando Tu Salud health fair from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the Alliance Against Diabetes, 3930 E. Patrick Lane, Las Vegas, Nev. 89120. The event will feature free blood glucose screenings as well as other health screenings, diabetes and health resources, social services referrals, entertainment, and more. Celebrating Your Health is a tobacco-free event, and free resources will be available to assist community members to quit smoking.  For additional information, visit the Health District’s Spanish-language Viva Saludable.org website.

Measles case in Clark County

An investigation by the Southern Nevada Health District has confirmed an internationally imported case of measles in Clark County. The patient is an international visitor and the potential Las Vegas exposure occurred between Saturday, March 9 and Monday, March 11. The patient’s immunization status is unknown. The Health District is notifying individuals who might have had contact with this patient and will not be releasing any additional information about the patient.

2019 County Health Rankings Released

Clark County ranks 8th healthiest in Nevada according to the annual County Health rankings, up from 10th in last year’s ranking. The County Health Rankings are released each year by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute (UWPHI). ‘Tis the Season – Mosquito Season, that is!

LAS VEGAS – As temperatures increase in Southern Nevada, so does mosquito activity, and so do the activities of the Southern Nevada Health District’s Mosquito Surveillance Program staff. The Health District is reminding residents to “Fight the Bite” this season by eliminating standing water around their home, preventing mosquito bites by wearing an EPA-registered repellent, and reporting mosquito activity to the Health District by calling (702) 759-1633.

Measles Update – Travelers urged to protect themselves

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting 465 cases of measles in 19 states so far this year. This is the second-greatest number of cases reported in the United States since measles was eliminated in 2000. The Southern Nevada Health District reported two confirmed cases of measles in Clark County the last six months. The CDC is urging people to protect themselves before traveling, especially to international destinations.

Health District working with community partners to address high rates of syphilis and congenital syphilis in Southern Nevada

In 2017, Clark County ranked first in the nation for rates of primary and secondary syphilis and second for rates of congenital syphilis. Cases of congenital syphilis have been steadily increasing at an alarming rate in Clark County. In 2016, there were nine reported cases, in 2017 there were 20 cases, and in 2018 there were 24 cases of congenital syphilis in Clark County.

Every year, the Southern Nevada Health District recognizes individuals or organizations whose actions have served to improve the health status of the community. This year, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) volunteers Maria Soto-Henry and Michael Slonina, and Clark County Code Enforcement’s Lt. Dave Pollex were honored.

The individual, a female over the age of 50, had the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness and has recovered. There were no reported human cases of West Nile virus in Clark County last year.

Low-cost immunizations will be available for kids who qualify, and parents can update their shots as well.

The Southern Nevada Health District is raising awareness about hepatitis and encouraging people to get tested during Hepatitis Awareness Month, and on May 19, Hepatitis Testing Day. Millions of people in the United States are infected with hepatitis and many are not aware of their infection.

Media Advisory: Southern Nevada Health District, Clark County, UNLV to conduct Mega-POD full-scale emergency response exercise

The Southern Nevada Health District, Clark County, and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas are planning a full-scale emergency response exercise called The Mega-POD to test plans that include dispensing medication to Southern Nevadans in a public health emergency. The exercise will include approximately 200 staff members from Clark County who will play multiple roles during the exercise.

First West Nile-positive mosquitoes of the season identified

The Southern Nevada Health District’s Mosquito Surveillance Program identified the first West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes of the season in the 89005 ZIP code. The first human case of West Nile virus in Southern Nevada was reported in April. The individual, a female over the age of 50, had the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness and has recovered. There were no reported human cases of West Nile virus in Clark County last year.

Health District declares acute hepatitis A outbreak in Clark County

The Southern Nevada Health District has confirmed a significant increase in the number of acute hepatitis A cases in Clark County. Between January 1, 2019, and May 31, 2019, there have been 37 reported acute hepatitis A cases, compared to 17 reported cases in 2018, no reported case in 2017, and six reported cases in 2016 during the same period.

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting its second human case of West Nile virus in Southern Nevada in 2019. The individual, a female under the age of 50, has the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness and has been hospitalized. The Health District reported its first West Nile case in April in a woman over the age of 50 with the more serious form of the illness; she has since recovered. There were no reported human cases of West Nile virus in Clark County last year.

Health District issues precautions as additional West Nile virus cases reported

Three more Clark County residents have tested positive for West Nile virus, and the Southern Nevada Health District is reminding the public to take precautions to protect themselves from this potentially serious disease. One individual is a male over the age of 50 who had the non-neuroinvasive form of the illness, and another is a female under the age of 50 who had the neuroinvasive form of the illness. The third individual is a male over the age of 50 who was asymptomatic and is classified as a presumptively viremic donor (PVD).

West Nile Virus Update

LAS VEGAS – The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting Clark County’s sixth case of West Nile virus. The individual is a female under the age of 50 who has the neuroinvasive form of the illness. West Nile virus is considered endemic in Clark County, having first been identified in 2005. This new case is a reminder to the public of the importance of preventing mosquito bites and eliminating breeding sources around their homes.

One individual is a female over the age of 50, and the other is a male under the age of 50. These new cases bring the year’s total to eight. Six of the eight West Nile cases reported to the Health District had neuroinvasive illness.

The Southern Nevada Health District reports three more Clark County residents have neuroinvasive illness caused by the West Nile virus. All three individuals are male, and over the age of 50. These new cases bring the year’s total to 11. Nine of the 11 cases reported to the Health District had the neuroinvasive form of the illness.

Public Health Update – Health District reports 13th, 14th, and 15th Cases of West Nile Virus

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting three additional cases of West Nile virus, bring the year’s total to 15. One individual is a female under the age of 50 with the non-neuroinvasive form of the illness. The other two individuals are both male, under the age of 50, with the non-neuroinvasive form of the illness. Of the 15 reported cases, 10 had the more serious, neuroinvasive form of the illness.

Hepatitis A outbreak cases increase to 83 in Southern Nevada

In June, the Southern Nevada Health District announced Clark County was experiencing an outbreak of hepatitis A cases. Since November 2018, the Health District has reported 83 outbreak-associated cases of hepatitis A. In the past few years total cases reported have been significantly lower: 39 cases reported in 2018; 13 cases in 2017; and six reported cases in 2016. People who are at increased risk for infection include people who use drugs and those experiencing homelessness. Of the reported cases, more than 92 percent were people who used drugs (injection or non-injection), and more than 80 percent were among people experiencing homelessness. Weekly hepatitis A outbreak updates will be available on the Health District website at www.SNHD.info/hep-a-control.

Health District reports potential measles exposure

LAS VEGAS - The Southern Nevada Health District is informing individuals and the public who were at different locations listed below that they might have been exposed to a person who was confirmed to have a case of measles. Because measles can be highly contagious, the Health District is advising people who may have been exposed to review their immunization status and contact their health care providers if they are not fully immunized against measles or have not already had the disease. This measles case was reported in a visitor. There have been no additional cases reported in Clark County residents.

Twenty-eight cases of West Nile virus reported

The Southern Nevada Health District is declaring an outbreak of West Nile virus in Clark County after receiving reports of 28 cases of the disease in humans – the highest case count in a season since the virus was first detected in the state in 2004. In addition to the high number of cases, 17 of the 28 reported cases have had the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness.

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting 10 additional West Nile virus cases for a total of 29 cases. The individuals are nine males, six of whom are over the age 50, three under the age of 50; and one female over the age of 50. Seven of the new cases have the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness.

Southern Nevada Harm Reduction Alliance hosts its annual International Overdose Awareness Day event, Aug. 29

In 2017, there were 464 fatal drug overdoses (excluding alcohol) in Clark County. Opioid-related overdoses and deaths continue to occur across the United States and the world. In an effort to acknowledge those deaths, the Southern Nevada Harm Reduction Alliance (SNHRA) is participating in its 3rd annual International Overdose Awareness Day, from 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., Thursday, August 29 at the Chuck Minker Sports Complex, 275 N. Mojave Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89101. The SNHRA will also offer overdose prevention trainings at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Participants will receive a free overdose prevention kit that contains nasal naloxone (Narcan®), the opioid overdose reversal medication, as well as community resources.

The Southern Nevada Health District has identified a person with hepatitis A that worked at a 7-Eleven convenience store located at 2910 S. Maryland Parkway, Las Vegas, NV 89109 (Maryland Parkway and Vegas Valley Drive) while they were potentially infectious to others.

Advisory: Nevada public health authorities recommend ceasing of e-cigarette, vaping product use

Carson City Health and Human Services, Southern Nevada Health District, and Washoe County Health District are warning the public of the potential for severe lung illness associated with the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes). The public health authorities are advising people not to use vaping products and e-cigarettes. These products should never be used by youth, young adults, pregnant women, and people who do not currently use tobacco products.

Illness in Clark County resident linked to vaping

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting Clark County’s first confirmed case of severe respiratory illness linked to e-cigarette products in a person under the age of 18. The youth was hospitalized with respiratory symptoms that met the case definition established by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). A pulmonary infection has not been identified. The patient was released from the hospital and is recovering.

LAS VEGAS – Southern Nevadans may not be exchanging their summer attire for sweaters just yet, but the fall season is officially here, and that means it’s the perfect time for people to protect themselves and their families from the flu! The flu vaccine is available at the Southern Nevada Health District’s immunization clinics as well as community clinics and pharmacies throughout the valley. The Health District also offers flu vaccine specifically for people age 65 and older. Cost of the flu vaccine is covered by most insurance with no copay. Chief Health Officer announces retirement

Dr. Joe Iser, Chief Health Officer of the Southern Nevada Health District, announced his retirement from the Southern Nevada Health District today. Dr. Iser has served as the Chief Health Officer since September 2013. His retirement is effective January 3, 2020.

Fourth vaping-related illness confirmed in Clark County

The Southern Nevada Health District has confirmed a fourth case of severe respiratory illness linked to e-cigarettes in a Clark County resident. The individual is over the age of 18. The Health District previously reported cases in an individual under the age of 18 and two over the age of 18. The first case confirmed in Clark County was reported in September 2019. November is American Diabetes Month

LAS VEGAS – Ten percent of adults over the age of 20 in Clark County live with the realities of diabetes every day. For others, November is a time to bring awareness to one of the most prevalent diseases in the United States. During American Diabetes Month, the Southern Nevada Health District reminds people with diabetes, people at-risk for developing diabetes, and their families that self-management and prevention are keys to good health. The Health District promotes its cessation resources in support of the Great American Smokeout

LAS VEGAS – Seven out of 10 smokers say they want to quit. Thursday, Nov. 21, is the 42nd Great American Smokeout, and the Southern Nevada Health District has smoking cessation resources and tools, as well as information about alternative tobacco products, smoke-free living and smoke-free meeting spaces on its GetHealthyClarkCounty.org website to support those taking that first, second, or multiple attempts to quit.

Fast-Track Cities Initiative is a global partnership between the City of Paris, Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), United Nations Human Settlement Program, and the International Association of Providers of AIDS Care (IAPAC), in collaboration with local, national, and international organizations and public health agencies. A formal commitment to this process requires Southern Nevada’s mayors or elected jurisdictional officials to designate their municipalities as Fast-Track Cities by signing the Paris Declaration.

As flu activity begins to increase around the holidays, the demand for flu vaccine typically decreases after November. Fifth vaping-related illness confirmed in Clark County

The Southern Nevada Health District has confirmed a fifth case of lung injury associated with e-cigarettes or vaping product use in a Clark County resident. The individual is over the age of 18. The five reported cases in Clark County include one individual under the age of 18 and two under the age of 20. The first case confirmed in Clark County was reported in September 2019.

Southern Nevada Health District Holiday Closures

LAS VEGAS – All Southern Nevada Health District public health centers and clinics will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Wednesday, Dec. 25, 2019, for the holidays. All locations will reopen at their regularly scheduled times on Thursday, Dec. 26. Additionally, all Health District locations will close at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 31 and be closed on New Year’s Day. All services will resume on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2020.

Nevadans Breathing in a Healthier New Year

LAS VEGAS – Nevadans will be breathing in a healthier New Year when updates to the Nevada Clean Indoor Air Act take effect on January 1. During the 2019 legislative session, Nevada’s clean indoor air law was modernized to protect children and adults from secondhand aerosol from electronic vaping products in most public places and indoor places of employment.
