Tuesday, March 10 is the 10th annual observance of National Women and Girls HIV Awareness Day highlighting the impact HIV/AIDS has on women and girls across the country. The Southern Nevada Health District has identified three additional cases of measles. The cases, in adults under the age of 55, are considered to be the result of transmission from an under-immunized staff member at Emeril's New Orleans Fish House at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino earlier in February. The new cases are two staff members and a patron.

The Southern Nevada Health District today has issued a health advisory regarding electronic cigarettes in response to an increase in their use across the United States and in Clark County. The Health District encourages policymakers, health care providers, parents, and e-cigarette users to educate themselves regarding the harmful chemicals in these products and to limit their availability in the community.

The Southern Nevada Health District has identified two additional cases of measles in a young child and an adult in Southern Nevada. Currently, there have been four confirmed cases of measles in Clark County in 2015. These are the first confirmed cases in Clark County since 2011.

This Saturday, Feb. 7 marks the annual National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day to encourage African-Americans to learn their HIV status. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), African-Americans accounted for approximately 44 percent of new HIV infections in 2010. The Southern Nevada Health District and its partners will offer free HIV testing at two locations on Saturday, Feb. 7.

Love your heart . . . love your loved ones . . .heart disease remains the leading cause of death in Nevada and across the country. In 2012, more than 5,000 Nevadans died from heart disease. The Southern Nevada Health District recently identified flu cases in the Las Vegas Valley through its sentinel surveillance program. Although current flu activity is mild in Southern Nevada and throughout the country, activity increases during the holiday season. The health district is reminding Valley residents, especially those most at risk from complications from the illness, that it is not too late to get vaccinated. Influenza season typically peaks in Southern Nevada in January or February and an influenza immunization is the best method to prevent illness. Diabetes is one of the most prevalent diseases in the United States with approximately 9.3 percent of the population impacted. That translates to about 29.1 million Americans who have diabetes with 8.1 million of them undiagnosed, according to the American Diabetes Association. In Clark County, 9.5 percent of adults have diabetes, according to the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS). The weather is cooling off, the leaves are falling, it’s almost Halloween . . . that means flu season is right around the corner. Today the Southern Nevada Health District was awarded a grant of $2,650,555 to address tobacco use and exposure; poor nutrition; physical inactivity; and lack of access to chronic disease prevention, risk reduction and management opportunities in Clark County.

The Southern Nevada Health District and Clark County Emergency Management will host two community meetings in Moapa to discuss mosquito surveillance and abatement related to the recent flooding. Falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries in older adults; each year, one in three older adults will fall; an injury from a fall can impact quality of life for older adults; and every 15 seconds, an older adult is seen in an emergency department for a fall-related injury. Falls are preventable and they are not an inevitable part of aging, according to the National Council on Aging. The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting a case of West Nile virus in a male over the age of 50 with the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness. This is the first human case of West Nile illness in Clark County in 2014. There were nine cases reported in 2013. The Southern Nevada Health District has received increased reports of gastrointestinal illness in the community and has confirmed norovirus as the cause of a recent outbreak. The health district is stressing the importance of practicing appropriate hygiene to limit the spread of norovirus and other types of gastrointestinal illness. People who are sick should stay home from work or school until at least three days after their symptoms have ended. In addition, people who are sick or who are recovering from a gastrointestinal infection, including norovirus, should not prepare food or care for others until three days after they have recovered.

March 24 is World TB Day, the date in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch announced he identified M. tuberculosis, the bacteria responsible for one of the world’s most dreaded diseases. Today, tuberculosis affects approximately two billion people worldwide. In 2013, there were 75 cases in Clark County and a total of 92 reported throughout the state.

It’s time to kick some butt… Wednesday, March 19 is national Kick Butts Day, a nationwide initiative, sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids to stop tobacco use by children and young adults.

Based on the results of positive laboratory testing, the Southern Nevada Health District has confirmed the illnesses it is currently investigating among a group of attendees of the National Youth Football Championship event as norovirus. As part of this type of investigation the health district often obtains appropriate samples in an effort to confirm the cause of the illness. Norovirus is common and can spread easily through person to person contact. It can also be difficult to eliminate.

The holiday season is almost here and that means— temptation! From the parties to the shopping, it’s easy to take a break from healthy habits. Registration is open for the Southern Nevada Health District’s Get Healthy Holiday Challenge. The Challenge will help participants stay healthy during the holidays.

The Southern Nevada Health District is currently investigating a tuberculosis exposure that occurred via a patient within Summerlin Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit this past summer. Hospital management and staff have fully cooperated with every step of the investigation and continue to partner with the health district to respond to this incident.

This flu season the Southern Nevada Health District offers the newly available quadrivalent influenza vaccine, which protects against four strains of the flu. Health district clinics will begin at 8 a.m., Monday, Sept. 23. This is the first time the health district will offer the four-strain vaccine and it is the only type of vaccine that will be available for adults.

The Southern Nevada Health District and its Nevada Goes Fall Free Coalition partners have designated Sept. 22-28 as Fall Prevention Awareness Week to coincide with National Fall Prevention Awareness Day, Sun., Sept. 22. The Southern Nevada Health District’s Director of Community Health, Dr. Thomas R. Coleman, has withdrawn his application for consideration for the position of the chief health officer due to personal family matters.

The Southern Nevada District Board of Health today selected Dr. Thomas R. Coleman to be the new chief health officer for the Southern Nevada Health District. Coleman and the Board will begin contract negotiations. The final appointment will be made at the August board of health meeting.

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting an additional case of West Nile illness in an adult, over the age of 50 who is hospitalized with the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness. This is the fifth case reported in Clark County in 2013. In addition, West Nile positive mosquitoes have been detected in the 89122 zip code.

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting two additional cases of West Nile virus in Clark County for 2013. The patients are a 77-year-old man and an 87-year-old woman both of whom were hospitalized with the more serious neuroinvasive form of the illness. To date, there are four cases of West Nile illness in 2013; one patient has died. This is the fifth West Nile-related death in Clark County since 2003.

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting one case of hepatitis A linked to a multi-state outbreak of hepatitis A being investigated in collaboration with the Nevada State Health Division, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The outbreak is associated with frozen Townsend Farms Organic Antioxidant Blend of berries sold at Costco

The Southern Nevada Health District investigated a potential exposure to a rabid bat found in the yard of a Las Vegas home. Because the bat tested positive for rabies, the health district is reminding Clark County residents that bats can be dangerous to people. Although the majority of bats are healthy and good for the environment, a small number are infected with the rabies virus and people should avoid contact with them.
