Four elementary school classes win Health District’s annual UNLV Coaches Challenge

Coaches to visit winning classrooms

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
April 29, 2013

LAS VEGAS – The message is simple . . . fruit, vegetables and physical activity are good for you. Clark County School District elementary school children from several schools took the message to heart and won the 6th annual UNLV Coaches Challenge, a collaborative program that encourages grade-school children to choose healthy food and participate in physical activity. A UNLV head coach will visit each winning classroom throughout May to congratulate the students for their efforts and to encourage them to make healthy choices and to be physically active. For information about the annual Coaches Challenge or tips about adopting healthy lifestyle tips, visit www.GetHealthyClarkCounty.org external link or call the Southern Nevada Health District’s office of chronic disease prevention and health promotion, (702) 759-1270.

This year’s Coaches Challenge included more than 13,000 elementary school children from 112 schools. Participating classes collectively earned a total of 182,966 points, which is the most since the program began in 2007. Each point equals a serving of fruit or vegetables or 15 minutes of physical activity.

This year’s UNLV Coaches Challenge winning classrooms represent four elementary schools:

2nd Grade: Lamping Elementary School: UNLV volleyball head coach, Cindy Fredrick, 9:30 a.m., Thu., May 9. Lamping Elementary School, 2551 Summit Grove Dr., Henderson, 89052

3rd Grade/Schorr Elementary School: UNLV men’s tennis head coach, Owen Hambrook, 10 a.m. Wed., May 1. Schorr Elementary School, 11420 Placid Street, LV 89183.

The annual Coaches Challenge is a collaborative effort between the Southern Nevada Health District, the Clark County School District and UNLV Athletics.
