Ready, Set, School: Time to schedule required vaccinations

As families prepare for the first day of school on Monday, August 10, the Southern Nevada Health District is encouraging parents and guardians to schedule required school vaccinations now to avoid long waits during the late-summer rush. Immunization appointments are available at Health District clinics across the Valley for students entering kindergarten, seventh grade and 12th grade. This year, the Health District also is offering $20 sports physicals through the Southern Nevada Community Health Center and encouraging families who may need birth certificates for school registration to order them early.

First West Nile virus case of the season reported

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting the first case of West Nile virus in a Clark County resident this year. The patient, a woman in her 40s, was diagnosed with the neuroinvasive form of the illness. She was hospitalized and has since recovered. The patient reported travel to another state where multiple human West Nile virus cases have been reported and was also present in Clark County during the incubation period.

Health District, youth advocates rally for tobacco-free future at CSN

College students are at the center of a growing push for healthier campuses, and local youth are leading the charge. World TB Day spotlight: Tuberculosis remains a global threat

The Southern Nevada Health District will observe World TB Day on Tuesday, March 24, with the theme, “Yes! We Can End TB!” Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the world’s leading infectious disease killers, causing an estimated 1.3 million deaths affecting 10.7 million people globally in 2025. TB occurs in every country and across all age groups, although most cases are concentrated in parts of Asia and Africa.

Statement from the Southern Nevada Health District

The intent of the proposed updates is to modernize 17-year-old regulations, clarify standards, and strengthen groundwater protections as Clark County continues to grow. The Southern Nevada Health District has heard clearly from residents regarding the proposed updates to septic system regulations. After approximately 1,000 community members attended the recent public meeting, the meeting was postponed to allow for additional review and community discussion. We appreciate the strong community engagement and want to clarify both what was proposed — and how we are moving forward.

Southern Nevada Health District detects medetomidine in illicit drug supply

he Southern Nevada Health District has identified medetomidine—a veterinary sedative also known as “rhino tranq”—in the local illicit drug supply through its community drug surveillance program, which anonymously samples used drug paraphernalia. While medetomidine use has not been widely reported in Nevada, the Health District has confirmed five positive samples since July 1, 2025, representing less than 1% of all samples collected since September 2024.

Community leaders to address tobacco’s disproportionate impact on Black communities

The Southern Nevada Health District’s Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion will host the 3rd Annual Tobacco‑Free Living Summit through its Tobacco Control Program. The summit will address the detrimental effects of tobacco use within the Black community. To help reduce this burden, the Tobacco Control Program created Because We Matter LV, an African American-focused tobacco initiative, which guides the program’s efforts and serves as the foundation for this year’s event.
