Know your status this National HIV Testing Day
Health District encourages HIV testing and awareness of prevention and treatment options
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:June 25, 2026
LAS VEGAS — In recognition of National HIV Testing Day on Saturday, June 27, the Southern Nevada Health District is encouraging community members to make HIV testing part of their routine health care. A simple HIV test can provide peace of mind, connect people to lifesaving treatment and help prevent the spread of HIV. Knowing one’s HIV status is the first step toward accessing treatment, prevention services and support that improve health outcomes and help prevent HIV transmission.
Why HIV Testing and Early Diagnosis Matter
“Knowing your status is an important part of taking charge of your health and well-being,” said Dr. Cassius Lockett, District Health Officer for the Southern Nevada Health District. “HIV testing is quick, confidential and widely available, and early diagnosis can make a significant difference in long-term health outcomes.”
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone ages 13 to 64 be tested for HIV at least once as part of routine healthcare. People with ongoing risk of HIV infection should be tested at least annually, and those at higher risk may benefit from testing every three months.
According to the CDC, more than 1.2 million Americans are living with HIV, and about 13 percent are unaware of their status. In Clark County, 454 new HIV diagnoses were reported in 2025, down from 552 in 2024. However, the number of Clark County residents living with HIV increased from 12,570 in 2024 to 12,823 in 2025. These numbers highlight the importance of ongoing testing, treatment and prevention efforts throughout Southern Nevada. HIV continues to disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minority communities, as well as gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men.
