Southern Nevada Health District celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month

In observance of Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to October 15, the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation. Noting that Hispanic/Latin Americans comprise the largest minority group in the United States, District Health Officer Dr. Fermin Leguen said, “Diversity is one of our country’s greatest strengths, and we are grateful for the far-reaching impact of Hispanic culture on our society. Health District identifies supplements made with nonfood grade ingredients

The Southern Nevada Health District has identified a local supplement manufacturer, Harmonic Innerprizes, sold products made with ingredients that are not food grade and with ingredients from unapproved sources, including some that could lead to heavy metal toxicity. Testing of products from the facility that were found to be from unapproved or unidentified sources is being conducted to determine more information about the contents of the supplements.

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, an opportunity to raise awareness about childhood obesity and ways to prevent it while also reducing its stigma. August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day

The Southern Nevada Harm Reduction Alliance (SNHRA) is hosting its 7th International Overdose Awareness Day event on Thursday, August 31, from 4 – 7 p.m. at Chuck Minker Sports Complex, located at 275 N. Mojave Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89101. The event is an opportunity to acknowledge the loss of friends and loved ones to fatal drug overdoses, while honoring the families and friends touched by overdoses. The observance also aims to reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths while raising awareness about overdose prevention and drug policy.

Special Friday immunization clinic added to the schedule

The Southern Nevada Health District has added another date to its lineup of back-to-school clinics. The Health District will be offering vaccinations at its Main Public Health Center on Friday, August 11, from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. The Health District urges parents and guardians to ensure their children have all mandatory vaccines before classes resume on August 7, but is prepared to provide expanded services throughout the first week of school to accommodate families in Southern Nevada.

The first day of school is less than one week away, and the Southern Nevada Health District is reminding parents and guardians that all students enrolled in Nevada public, private or charter schools must be up to date on mandatory vaccines before classes begin. SNHD immunization clinics are offering expanded dates and times to accommodate the back-to-school rush, but appointments are required. As temperatures rise and an excessive heat warning is issued, the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is urging area residents and visitors to take precautions. In 2023, there have been seven heat-associated deaths reported in Clark County, according to SNHD. During all of 2022, Clark County recorded 152 such deaths.

Health District identifies first West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes

The Mosquito Disease Surveillance Program of the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) has identified the first West Nile virus-positive mosquitoes of the season in the 89074 ZIP code. The analysis was conducted by the Southern Nevada Public Health Laboratory. West Nile Virus (WNV), the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental United States, is most commonly spread to people through the bite of an infected mosquito. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are no vaccines to prevent or medications to treat WNV in people.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), women outlive men in the United States by nearly six years. Diseases including heart disease, cancer and diabetes affect men to a greater extent than women, but these conditions can, in many cases, be prevented through regular check-ups and healthy lifestyle choices. Health District calls attention to xylazine risk

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is urging heightened public awareness of the health dangers associated with xylazine, an animal tranquilizer that is increasingly being found in the country’s illicit drug supply and linked to overdose deaths throughout the United States. Xylazine, also known as “tranq,” is not approved for human consumption. It can be life-threatening and is especially dangerous when combined with opioids such as fentanyl.

Health District investigating cases of Legionnaires’ disease

The Southern Nevada Health District is investigating two cases of Legionnaires’ disease reported in guests who stayed separately at The Orleans Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nev., in December 2022 and January 2023. The hotel is assisting in the investigation and taking steps to notify current and past guests dating back to December 16, 2022.

The Southern Nevada Health District is investigating a report of an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness reported at Wayne Tanaka Elementary School on Jan. 27, 2023. To date, the agency is reporting a total of 71 confirmed and probable cases of norovirus associated with this outbreak.

National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is February 7

Three new COVID-19 self-test kit vending machines added in Southern Nevada

Three new COVID-19 self-test kit vending machines are now operational in Clark County, further improving access to this vital tool for mitigating transmission of the virus. The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) partnered with the City of Las Vegas and the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) to install COVID-19 at-home test kit vending machines at the East Las Vegas Community Center and the South Strip Transit Terminal, respectively. The third additional machine was installed at the Fremont Public Health Center, operated by SNHD. Three other machines were installed previously at locations in Las Vegas, Mesquite and Laughlin.

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting a case of Listeria in a Clark County resident. The patient is an adult male who was hospitalized and released. The patient reported eating enoki mushrooms during the incubation period. The Health District is continuing its investigation into this case. The Clark County case is one of two that have been reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Don’t spend your holidays with COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses

The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is urging area residents to stay up to date with their COVID-19 and flu vaccinations and connecting with a health care provider to learn more about COVID-19 treatment options in advance of the holiday season. District Health Officer Dr. Fermin Leguen said, “With the triple threat of seasonal flu, COVID-19 and RSV looming, we’re advising people to get their flu vaccine and updated COVID-19 boosters before their Thanksgiving get-togethers.” He notes that it takes about two weeks for any of the vaccines to provide full protection.

The Great American Smokeout is Thursday, November 17

Thursday, November 17 is the Great American Smokeout, an opportunity for smokers to take the first step to quit the habit. It is estimated that eight out of 10 smokers would like to quit smoking, which remains the single largest preventable cause of death and illness in the world. New COVID-19 bivalent boosters authorized

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the first updated COVID-19 boosters and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has issued guidelines for their use in people ages 12 years and older. The Southern Nevada Health District has started receiving some of the new bivalent COVID-19 vaccines and expects to begin offering them next week in its clinics.

COVID-19 self-test kit vending machine available in Laughlin

COVID-19 testing kits are now more accessible in Laughlin, NV. The Southern Nevada Health District has partnered with Clark County to install a COVID-19 at-home test kit vending machine inside the Regional Government Center at 101 Civic Way, Laughlin, NV 89029. The test kits are free and are available Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. This is the third test kit vending machine in Clark County.

Southern Nevada Health District starts weekly monkeypox update

The Southern Nevada Health District will update its monkeypox case reports weekly starting Wednesday, August 17. The update will include probable and confirmed case counts, cases by onset date and basic demographic information as well as vaccine doses administered through Tuesday. As of Tuesday, August 16, the Health District is reporting 100 confirmed or probable cases and has administered 2,848 vaccine doses.

The Southern Nevada Health District has received reports of a probable case of monkeypox virus in a man in his 40s. The individual has a history of travel and is isolating at home. This brings the total number of confirmed or probable monkeypox cases to five in Clark County. Southern Nevada Health District reports additional probable monkeypox cases

The Southern Nevada Health District has received reports of two additional probable monkeypox cases in Clark County residents. The additional cases are a man in his 50s and a man in his 30s, one of whom is isolating at home and the other is hospitalized. The Health District is looking at the health status of close contacts and specimens are being sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for confirmation. This brings the total number of confirmed or probable monkeypox cases to four in Clark County. None of these cases are associated with each other. As of Wednesday, the U.S. has reported a total of 560 cases.

Second monkeypox case in a Clark County resident reported

The Southern Nevada Health District has received a report of a second case of monkeypox in a Clark County resident. The individual was diagnosed in another state. The case information was reported directly to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by another jurisdiction. As a result, the Health District is working with state and federal partners to collect information to determine if the case is probable or confirmed.

COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 6 months to 5 years available in Health District clinics tomorrow

Tomorrow morning, children ages 5 and under will have access to COVID-19 vaccines in Southern Nevada Health District clinics. The Health District will offer the Pfizer vaccine, a three-dose series, at its clinics located at the College of Southern Nevada’s West Charleston and North Las Vegas campuses, the Galleria at Sunset, the Boulevard Mall inside El Mercado, and at the Southern Nevada Community Health Center clinic at 280 S. Decatur Blvd. (located in the external structure on the south side of the building). The Health District will also begin offering the Moderna vaccine, a two-dose series, tomorrow, at the Health Center clinic at 280 S. Decatur Blvd.

Health District launches online appointment system for immunization services

Making appointments for immunizations at a Southern Nevada Health District public health center is now more convenient with the launch of its new online system. Starting today, immunization clinic clients can make their own appointments online through the Patient Portal at https://vax4nv.nv.gov/patient/s for travel, flu, measles, rubella, pertussis, hepatitis A and B, and other routine vaccines offered at all four of the Health District’s immunization clinic locations. The probable case of monkeypox in a Clark County resident has been confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The case was first reported by the Southern Nevada Health District on June 15. The individual is a male in his 20s. He reported recent domestic travel, did not require hospitalization and is isolating at home. No additional cases of monkeypox have been reported at this time.

Southern Nevada Health District to begin offering COVID-19 vaccines for children ages 6 months to 5 years

The Southern Nevada Health District will begin offering COVID-19 vaccines to children 6 months to 5 years of age beginning Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at its clinics. The Health District will initially have the Pfizer vaccine, a three-dose series, available in its clinics. The announcement follows recommendations by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices for both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines and authorization for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Southern Nevada Health District to conduct neighborhood CASPER survey, Saturday, June 18

On Saturday, June 18, teams from the Southern Nevada Health District will begin interviewing household members in Clark County to assess their access to COVID-19 testing services and resources and provide feedback to response staff and partners on the status of current efforts to inform and educate the community so that corrective actions can be implemented. These neighborhood surveys are part of the Community Assessment for Public Health Emergency Response (CASPER) technique to gather information to assist in emergency planning and response efforts. The goal of this CASPER survey is to gain a greater understanding of the access Clark County residents had to COVID-19 services and resources, particularly those who were disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.

Southern Nevada Health District COVID-19 Update

The Southern Nevada Health District’s COVID-19 Dashboard has been updated to include COVID-19 reinfection data from June 2020. For surveillance purposes, the Health District reports COVID-19 reinfections as a positive COVID-19 polymerase chain (PCR) test result collected at least 90 days after an initial positive PCR test. As of June 13, the Health District has identified 24,914 COVID-19 reinfections. As compared to first-time infections, reinfections remain rare; however, the number of reinfections increased during the Omicron wave between December 2021 and January 2022.

Southern Nevada Health District reports first probable Monkeypox case in Clark County

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting a presumptive positive case of monkeypox in a Clark County resident with recent domestic travel history. The Health District is coordinating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to perform confirmatory testing. The individual is a male in his 20s that did not require hospitalization and is isolating at home. The Health District is investigating and conducting contact tracing related to this case, and no additional cases have been identified at this time. Monkeypox spreads from person to person through close physical contact with infectious monkeypox sores, bodily fluids, contact with objects or fabrics that have been used by someone who has monkeypox, sexual contact, or prolonged face-to-face contact.

Clark County reaches high COVID-19 community level

Clark County has reached a high community level for COVID-19, and the Southern Nevada Health District is strongly recommending individuals wear masks when in public indoor places and they stay up to date on their COVID-19 vaccines. People who have symptoms or have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 should get tested, and people who are sick should stay home and isolated from others in their household. Those who are at higher risk for severe illness may need to take additional precautions. This can include having a plan for rapid testing if needed and talking to your health care provider about options for treatments with oral antivirals and monoclonal antibodies.

Southern Nevadans now have expanded access to COVID-19 testing with the opening of self-test vending machines at two locations.. The Southern Nevada Health District and its partners installed two vending machines that dispense at-home self-test kits at the Regional Transportation Commission’s (RTC) Bonneville Transit Center (lobby), 101 E. Bonneville Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89101, and the Mesa View Regional Hospital (emergency department lobby), 1299 Bertha Howe Ave., Mesquite, NV 89027. Residents have already started to access test kits at both locations. A new location for a third vending machine will be available soon.

Celebrating 60 years of public health

Today, the Southern Nevada Health District commemorated its 60th anniversary with a State of the Health District address highlighting its accomplishments and challenges of the past few years. Following statutory authorization by the Nevada State Legislature in 1959, the agency began operations as the Clark County Health District in a temporary structure built as an Army Medical Station during World War II on June 5, 1962. The Health District employed 30 staff members, including four “sanitarians” responsible for inspecting some 800 eating and drinking establishments. Today, approximately 800 employees provide a variety of programs and services designed to protect and promote the health of Clark County residents and visitors, including inspecting more than 17,000 permitted food establishments each year.

Southern Nevada Health District launches Move Your Way® Summer Challenge

The Southern Nevada Health District’s Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion kicks off the 2022 Move Your Way® Summer Challenge with the City of Henderson’s Glow Bike Ride, Saturday, May 28, from 7:30 p.m. – 9 p.m. at Cornerstone Park, 1600 Wigwam Parkway, Henderson, NV, 89074. The Glow Bike Ride is the first event in the summer-long challenge to encourage Southern Nevadans to be more physically active. Southern Nevada Health District encourages continued precautions against COVID-19

As Clark County residents are celebrating school graduations and preparing to spend Memorial Day with family and friends, the Southern Nevada Health District is encouraging everyone to be more cautious as COVID-19 case counts and the positivity rate continues to increase. Individuals can protect themselves and others by wearing a well-fitting mask in public indoor places, especially those who are immunocompromised or have illnesses that increase their risk of getting seriously ill or requiring hospitalization from COVID-19.

COVID-19 vaccine booster dose available to children 5 through 11 years of age at Southern Nevada Health District vaccine clinics

Starting today, the Southern Nevada Health District is making COVID-19 vaccine booster doses available to children 5 through 11 years of age at all its vaccine clinics. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) amended the emergency use authorization for Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine today allowing for the expanded use of this vaccine.
