The Southern Nevada Health District is joining community partners to mark World AIDS Day on Monday, Dec. 1, a global day of unity and remembrance for people affected by HIV. In 2024, an estimated 41 million people worldwide were living with HIV, up from 39.9 million the previous year. In the United States, about 1.2 million people have HIV, and roughly 13% remain unaware of their infection and need testing. Locally, more than 12,000 Clark County residents are living with HIV, with 552 new diagnoses in 2024, an increase from 508 in 2023.

The Southern Nevada Health District is sharing information about a national investigation into cases of infant botulism potentially linked to ByHeart Whole Nutrition Infant Formula. At this time, no confirmed cases have been reported in Clark County. The Health District encourages parents and caregivers to review recall information and take appropriate steps to ensure the safety of infants in their care.

Reports of respiratory and influenza-like illnesses locally remain minimal in the community; however, seasonal flu activity is increasing. To date, 17 influenza-associated hospitalizations have been reported in Clark County.

The Southern Nevada Health District has received Vaccines for Children (VFC) and Section 317 COVID-19 vaccine allocations. Updated COVID-19 vaccines are available at all Health District Immunization Clinics for everyone 6 months and older, including people with private insurance, Medicaid, and uninsured and underinsured children and adults who qualify for vaccines through the VFC or 317 programs.

The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting a confirmed case of measles in a visitor to Clark County. The individual traveled from out of state, and potential exposures occurred on the morning of Monday, October 13 at Harry Reid International Airport. The individual spent time in Terminal 3 at the E Gates for a flight departing at approximately 8 a.m. and reported visiting no additional locations in Clark County outside of the airport.

The Southern Nevada Health District will observe National Latino AIDS Awareness Day on Wednesday, October 15, spotlighting the disproportionate impact of HIV on Hispanic/Latino communities and promoting prevention, testing, treatment and strategies to interrupt transmission.

COVID-19 vaccines for uninsured and underinsured individuals, and those who receive vaccine through the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program or the federal Section 317 program, will be available in the coming weeks. The Southern Nevada Health District is postponing the public hearing on proposed updates to its Individual Sewage Disposal Systems (ISDS) and Liquid Waste Management Regulations until after the new year. The additional time will allow for expanded outreach and public engagement before the Southern Nevada District Board of Health considers the proposed regulations.

Recommended seasonal vaccines are now available at Southern Nevada Health District Immunization Clinics. The Health District currently has updated COVID-19 vaccines for clients 5 years and older with private insurance and for adults with Medicaid. Updated COVID-19 vaccines for uninsured and underinsured individuals and those that receive vaccine from the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program or the federal Section 317 program will be available once they can be ordered following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) meeting later this month. Flu and RSV vaccines are currently available for eligible individuals.

The Southern Nevada Health District is reminding parents and caregivers of the importance of testing children younger than 6 years of age for lead poisoning. Lead exposure can cause serious, lifelong health problems, and early detection through a simple blood test is the only way to know if a child has been exposed. Testing is simple and can be done by your child’s doctor or at a lab with a referral. Children should be tested at ages 12 and 24 months. If your child is under 6 and has not had a lead test, ask your health care provider for one. Testing is free for Medicaid and Nevada Check Up beneficiaries and is covered by most private and employer-based insurance.

Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from September 15 to October 15, is a time to recognize the history, culture and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. The Southern Nevada Health District joins the community in honoring the traditions and achievements that have shaped the nation and continue to enrich the region.

On Wednesday, September 3, the Southern Nevada Health District received updated guidance advising that the COVID-19 vaccine for the 2025–2026 season is preferred for use over the previously licensed vaccine. As a result, the Health District will no longer offer the earlier formulation.

The Southern Nevada Health District does not yet have the updated COVID-19 vaccine available in our clinics. We do continue to have the previous formulation for people who are eligible.

September is Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, an opportunity to highlight how families can support healthier habits and help children grow up strong. The Southern Nevada Health District’s Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, in partnership with the Partners for a Healthy Nevada Coalition, encourages families to adopt the 5-2-1-0 guidelines—a set of simple, science-backed steps that can make a big difference in kids’ long-term health.

The Southern Nevada Health Consortium will host the 9th Annual International Overdose Awareness Day event on Saturday, August 30, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Foundation for Recovery, located at 4800 S. Alpine Place, Las Vegas, NV 89108. The event honors those who have died or suffered permanent injury from overdose, reduces stigma surrounding drug-related deaths, and raises awareness about overdose prevention and drug policy.

On Monday, August 25, the first day of the fall semester, Nevada State University will join more than 2,100 colleges and universities nationwide—including the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of Nevada, Reno—that have adopted 100% tobacco-free campus policies.

The Southern Nevada Health District has detected the presence of measles virus in the wastewater in Clark County. This is the first detection of measles virus in local wastewater and serves as an early indicator that the virus may be present in the community.

The Southern Nevada Health District is investigating three travel-associated cases of Legionnaires’ disease in individuals who stayed at Harrah’s Laughlin in May. All three were hospitalized; two have since recovered, and one remained hospitalized at the time the Health District received the report. 

To recognize National HIV Testing Day on Friday, June 27, the Southern Nevada Health District is encouraging everyone to "Level up your self-love: check your health status." This theme highlights the importance of knowing one’s HIV status and connecting with care and treatment if needed.

The Southern Nevada Health District has identified four cases of Salmonella infection in Clark County associated with a multistate outbreak linked to brown cage free and brown certified organic eggs. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is leading a coordinated investigation into the outbreak, which currently involves cases reported in several states.

With the new school year starting on Monday, August 11, the Southern Nevada Health District is urging parents and guardians to make sure their children are up to date on required immunizations. To avoid the last-minute rush, the Health District recommends scheduling an appointment now for kindergartners, 7th graders and 12th graders at one of its immunization clinics. Alternatively, parents may choose to make vaccination appointments with their pediatrician or local pharmacy.

The Southern Nevada Health District is investigating three travel-associated cases of Legionnaires’ disease in individuals who stayed at The Grandview. One person stayed at the property in February 2025, while the other two stayed in April 2025. All three were hospitalized; two have since recovered, and one remained hospitalized at the time the Health District received the report. The Health District does not have additional information about the individuals since they do not live in Nevada.

With the onset of mosquito season in Southern Nevada, the public is encouraged to help fight mosquitoes by eliminating common breeding sources such as green pools and areas or containers where standing water in yards and patios can accumulate. 

The Southern Nevada Health District is inviting pregnant mothers, as well as mothers with infants, to attend a Community Baby Shower today at the East Las Vegas Community Center. The event, hosted by the Health District’s Healthy Start Program and community partners, will take place from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m., with registration beginning at 9 a.m. The community center is located at 250 N. With triple-digit temperatures expected to arrive soon, Clark County, the Southern Nevada Health District and community partners are reminding residents and visitors that Southern Nevada’s desert heat can be dangerous for people of all ages and are offering safety tips to be prepared for the region’s upcoming hot weather.

The Southern Nevada Health District, in collaboration with community partners, has released the 2025 Community Health Assessment (CHA), a comprehensive evaluation of Clark County’s  health needs, strengths and available resources. The assessment is now available on the Healthy Southern Nevada website.

The Southern Nevada Health District’s Office of Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion has launched its annual Soda Free Summer Challenge, now underway through August 31. The campaign encourages everyone to choose healthier beverages in favor of soda and other sugary drinks.

The Southern Nevada Health District is investigating cases of acute gastrointestinal illnesses linked to the consumption of certain frozen half-shell oysters from South Korea. To date, five Clark County residents have reported illness after consuming oysters associated with this investigation. Currently, no epidemiological link has been confirmed, and no hospitalizations have been reported.

The Southern Nevada Health District is launching its annual observance of National Infant Immunization Week (April 21-25) by urging parents and guardians to keep young children up to date on recommended and routine vaccinations. This year’s campaign comes at a critical time, as communities across the country experience a resurgence in measles.

The Southern Nevada Health District is celebrating the 20th anniversary of Walk Around Nevada, a free, interactive program that has had more than 12,000 participants since its launch in 2005. The Walk Around Nevada program has been recognized as a Model Practice Program by the National Association of County and City Health Officials.

Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Awareness Week, observed April 13–19, is an opportunity to promote sexual health through education, reduce stigma and discrimination, and encourage prevention, testing, and treatment of STIs.

The Southern Nevada Health District is calling attention to the global impact of tuberculosis as it commemorates World TB Day on Monday, March 24. Across the globe, 1.25 million people died of TB and another 10.8 million became ill with the disease in 2023. While global efforts to combat TB have saved 79 million lives since 2000, the COVID-19 pandemic and other factors have reversed years of progress.  

The 2025 County Health Rankings & Roadmaps report, released today, shows Clark County is performing slightly better than the average Nevada county in population health and well-being, which includes length and quality of life. It also ranks slightly better than the average county in the nation. However, Clark County ranks slightly worse than the average Nevada county in community conditions, which include social and economic factors, the physical environment and health infrastructure.

The Southern Nevada Health District is hosting the 2024 State of Public Health and Legislative Advocacy Day to highlight public health issues impacting the community. The event will feature policy makers, community partners and staff members working on programs and initiatives related to congenital syphilis and substance use and harm reduction in Clark County.

In an effort to combat food insecurity and provide healthy food alternatives, the Southern Nevada Health District and The Obodo Collective are partnering to open a new greengrocer (produce store) in Las Vegas’ Historic Westside. The Obodo Greengrocer, located in the heart of the Historic Westside, will offer fresh, local fruits and vegetables along with other essential goods. The store will accept SNAP benefits to improve access to healthy food for residents in the underserved area.

In observance of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, the Southern Nevada Health District will join with community partners for a community health fair on Friday, February 7, to provide additional health services to the community. National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day highlights efforts to reduce HIV as well as other sexually transmitted infections and address HIV stigma in Black/African American communities.

February is American Heart Month, and the Southern Nevada Health District and community partners are offering free programs and classes to help people reduce their risk factors for heart disease. Heart disease and stroke are the first and fifth leading causes of death in the United States, respectively. Every 43 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a heart attack, and every four minutes, someone dies from a stroke. In 2022, cardiovascular disease accounted for 702,880 deaths in the U.S., with heart disease and stroke claiming more lives than all forms of cancer and chronic lower respiratory disease combined.

The Southern Nevada Health District is highlighting the 2nd Annual Tobacco-Free Living Summit, which will address the detrimental effects of tobacco use within the Black community.
