To detect an outbreak, it is essential to monitor illness levels within the community. When the number of illnesses rises above normal, public health professionals take action to control and prevent further spread until the outbreak is over. Follow the links on this page to explore local and national illness numbers.

Local Illness Numbers

Some diseases are required by law to be reported to the Southern Nevada Health District as soon as they are diagnosed by health care providers. The Health District collects all of this information and posts the data for public access. The common foodborne illnesses, such as salmonellosis caused by Salmonella, are organized under the heading “Enteric Diseases.” You can compare the numbers of illnesses from month to month or year to year. Please note, norovirus is not a reportable illness so the Health District cannot and does not track norovirus cases.

National Illness Numbers

For national numbers, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tracks the number of outbreaks reported by each state through the National Outbreak Reporting System (NORS). On their NORS Dashboard, you can view outbreaks occurring across the nation and customize the map based on type of outbreak, time period, setting, and more.
