Don’t let respiratory viruses crash your Halloween party

Fall Issue

Ghosts, goblins and things that go bump in the night may be part of the fun this Halloween. Respiratory viruses don’t have to be.

As Halloween brings parties, school activities, trick-or-treating and other gatherings, it’s also a good time to prepare for respiratory illness season. Flu, COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses can spread when people are together, but there are simple steps you can take to help protect yourself and the people around you.

Get vaccinated. Vaccination is an important tool for reducing the risk of serious illness from respiratory viruses. An annual flu vaccine is recommended for most people 6 months and older. Talk with your healthcare provider about which vaccines are recommended for you and your family, including updated COVID-19 vaccination.

The Southern Nevada Health District is offering updated seasonal flu and COVID-19 vaccines for people ages 5 and older, and flu vaccines for all ages. RSV vaccinations are also available for all recommended ages. Visit Immunization Clinic – Southern Nevada Health District for information on dates, locations, and how to make appointments. Vaccines may also be available from your healthcare provider or local pharmacy.

Stay home when you’re sick. No one wants to miss the Halloween fun, but staying home when you’re sick can help keep illness from spreading to friends, family members and co-workers.

Consider the people around you. Some people are more likely to become seriously ill from respiratory infections, including older adults, very young children and people with certain health conditions. Taking simple precautions can help protect them too.

So, before you head out to celebrate the spooky season with costumes and candy, take a few simple steps to help keep the respiratory virus goblins from joining the fun.
