Despite popular belief, there are mosquitoes in Southern Nevada.
In fact, over 25,698 mosquitoes were trapped in Clark County, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, Mesquite and surrounding areas in 2007.
The Southern Nevada Health District’s Environmental Health Division surveys mosquito populations for mosquito borne diseases, such as:
- West Nile Virus
- Western Equine Encephalitis
- St. Louis Encephalitis
Seventeen species of mosquitoes call Southern Nevada home. In order to breed, mosquitoes need a water source. By reducing the number of breeding sources, we can reduce the number of mosquitoes and cases of mosquito-borne disease.
Mosquito control is a community effort. Keeping your home free of mosquito breeding sites and by reporting stagnant water and green swimming pools to your local code enforcement agency, you can do your part in reducing mosquitoes and mosquito-borne disease in Southern Nevada.
