Health District to postpone public hearing on proposed septic system regulations

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
October 2, 2025

LAS VEGAS – The Southern Nevada Health District is postponing the public hearing on proposed updates to its Individual Sewage Disposal Systems (ISDS) and Liquid Waste Management Regulations until after the new year. The additional time will allow for expanded outreach and public engagement before the Southern Nevada District Board of Health considers the proposed regulations.

The Health District is updating its septic regulations to protect drinking water, prevent pollution of the environment, and avoid costly cleanups in the future. Septic systems that are aging or located near the water table can allow contaminants such as nitrates to enter groundwater and potentially cause illness. Updating the rules helps ensure wells remain safe and property owners avoid health risks and expensive repairs to their septic systems down the road. The proposed regulations can be found on the Health District’s website at www.snhd.info/septicregs.

The regulations, which have not been comprehensively updated since 2009, address inspection, permitting and maintenance standards for residential septic systems. The proposed updates are intended to simplify and clarify existing language while strengthening safeguards for public health and the environment.

The Health District emphasizes that public input is a vital part of this process. By extending the timeline, residents will have more opportunities to review the draft regulations, attend outreach sessions, ask questions, and share their feedback before any decisions are made. The agency also acknowledges the concerns raised by community members and appreciates the input received so far. Community voices are important, and the Health District remains committed to continued dialogue, transparency and mutual respect as the process moves forward.

Information about new workshop dates and the rescheduled Board of Health hearing will be posted to the Health District’s website and shared with the community as it becomes available.

Residents are encouraged to review the draft regulations, attend upcoming outreach sessions and provide comments to ensure community perspectives are considered.
