Hispanic Heritage Month highlights health, culture and community in Southern Nevada

Health District shares local health data and resources for Hispanic and Latino communities

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:September 14, 2026

LAS VEGAS —In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, observed September 15 to October 15, the Southern Nevada health District is highlighting the health data, resources and services that support Hispanic and Latino communities.

“Hispanic Heritage Month provides an opportunity to recognize the importance of supporting the health and well-being of Hispanic and Latino residents throughout Southern Nevada,” said Dr. Cassius Lockett, District Health Officer for the Southern Nevada Health District. “Local health data help us better understand the needs of the communities we serve and connect people with information, services and resources that can support healthier lives.”

Hispanic and Latino residents are an important part of Clark County’s diverse and vibrant community.   Understanding health conditions and the factors that influence health and well-being — including access to employment opportunities, nutritious food, health insurance and affordable housing — can help public health agencies and community partners better understand community needs. This information can help guide efforts to improve access to services and develop programs that support residents’ health and well-being.

Data from the 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System provide self-reported information related to chronic health conditions, health behaviors, and overall well-being among Clark County adults.

Selected health indicators for Hispanic adults in Clark County include:

Chronic conditions and health-related factors

  • Diabetes: 15.3% of Hispanic adults reported having diabetes, compared with 10.2% of white adults and 11.9% of Black adults.
  • High blood pressure: 38.3% of Hispanic adults reported having been diagnosed with high blood pressure, compared with 27.6% of white adults and 41.1% of Black adults.
  • Weight status: 40.1% of Hispanic adults were classified as overweight, compared with 37.5% of white adults and 34.3% of Black adults.
  • Physical activity: 26.7% of Hispanic adults reported being physically inactive, compared with 21.5% of white adults and 21.7% of Black adults.
  • Smoking: 12.5% of Hispanic adults reported smoking tobacco, compared with 12.2% of white adults and 15% of Black adults. Similarly, 6.9% of Hispanic adults reported using e-cigarettes, compared with 6.2% of white adults and 10.4% of Black adults.
  • Cholesterol: 35.6% of Hispanic adults reported having high cholesterol, compared with 42% of white adults and 36.8% of Black adults.
  • Physical health: 67.6% of Hispanic adults reported having no days of poor physical health during the previous 30 days, compared with 58.6% of white adults and 54.6% of Black adults.

These and other health indicators help the Health District and its community partners identify areas of strength and opportunities to support prevention, improve access to health information and connect residents with services.
