Health District reports first flu-related death of the season

Vaccination can help protect against serious respiratory illness

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:September 24, 2026

LAS VEGAS — The Southern Nevada Health District is reporting the first flu-related death of the season in a Clark County resident. The individual was a man in his 50s with underlying health conditions.

The Health District extends its condolences to his family and loved ones. While a death reported this early in the season is concerning, it is too early to predict the severity of the 2026-2027 season.

“On behalf of the Health District, I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends,” said Dr. Cassius Lockett, District Health Officer for the Southern Nevada Health District. “Flu causes serious illness and deaths every year. Older adults, young children and people with certain medical conditions are at greater risk. I urge everyone 6 months and older to get the seasonal flu and COVID-19 vaccines. Vaccination can help protect you and those around you from serious illness.”

Flu activity typically peaks between December and February but can circulate at any time of the year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone 6 months and older. Adults 65 and older, children younger than 2, pregnant women, people with underlying medical conditions and those with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for severe illness.

Seasonal flu and COVID-19 vaccines are available at Health District clinics. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, go to www.SNHD.info/immunizations. Updated flu and COVID-19 vaccines are also widely available at pharmacies and health care provider offices. Community members can talk with a health care provider or pharmacist about the vaccines recommended for them.

The Health District also encourages community members to take the following steps to help reduce the spread of flu, COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and running water. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer when soap and water are unavailable.
  • Stay home when you are sick and limit contact with others.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and throw the tissue away after use.
  • Regularly clean frequently touched surfaces.
  • Take antiviral medication as prescribed by a health care provider.

The Health District will begin active surveillance for the 2026-2027 flu season on October 4 and continue through May 22. The weekly Influenza Snapshot and Influenza Report by Age Group will be available at
