Health District to offer flu shots on Sept. 21

LAS VEGAS – The weather is finally cooling off and that means flu season is right around the corner. This year, the Southern Nevada Health District’s flu vaccine clinics will begin Monday, Sept. 21 at all locations. The health district is offering injectable, quadrivalent flu vaccine this season at its public health centers. The cost of the vaccine is $41 and the trivalent high dose vaccine for people age 65 and over is $59. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), manufacturers have projected they will provide between 171 and 179 million doses of flu vaccine for the upcoming season, projections may change as the season progresses. The health district encourages everyone 6 months and older to get flu vaccinations. People who have questions about flu vaccine, who have allergies to any of its components or who have had a previous reaction to a flu vaccine should contact a healthcare provider.
Anyone with questions regarding which vaccine is right for him or her should contact a health care provider. Some facilities in the valley are already offering flu vaccines to patrons or patients.
Immunizations are also available at the following health district locations:
- Main Public Health Center, 330 S. Valley View Blvd.
Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. - East Las Vegas Public Health Center, 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12, Las Vegas
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. - Henderson Public Health Center, 520 E. Lake Mead Parkway, Henderson
Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. - Mesquite Public Health Center, 830 Hafen Lane, Mesquite
Tuesday and Thursday, 8 a.m. – noon and 1 p.m. – 4 p.m.
The health district will schedule an immunization clinic in Laughlin in early November. Flu immunizations as well as childhood and adult immunizations will be available.
Flu vaccines are covered under the federal Vaccines for Children (VFC) program. The health district accepts the following insurance plans with no co-pay: Anthem Networks, Culinary, Cigna, Retiree’s Health Trust, Teacher’s Health Trust, Nevada Check-up (FFS, Amerigroup and HPN), Medicaid (FFS, Amerigroup and HPN), Medicare Part B and Medicare Railroad.
Flu shots are also recommended for people with certain medical conditions including:
- Asthma
- Neurological and neurodevelopmental
- Chronic lung disease
- Heart disease
- Blood disorders
- Endocrine disorders
- Kidney disorders
- Liver disorders
- Metabolic disorders
- People younger than 19 years of age who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy
- People who are morbidly obese
To help prevent the spread of the virus: avoid close contact with people who are sick, stay home if you’re sick, cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze, wash your hands, and avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
