FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
May 8, 2012

LAS VEGAS – The Southern Nevada Health District will observe National Women’s Health Week, May 13-19 with a special health fair from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m., Monday, May 14 at Valley Hospital on Shadow Lane. The health fair will offer women an opportunity to make appointments for life-saving health screenings and other social services resources. For additional information, visit the health district website, www.SNHD.info.

National Women’s Health Week is a weeklong observance coordinated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health. This year’s theme, “It’s Your Time,” encourages women to make their health a priority and to take steps to lower the risk of certain diseases.

The health district will provide family planning services at the health fair, women will be able to make appointments for low cost mammograms, pelvic exams, and primary care services, receive assistance with Medicaid information and applications, and sign up information for the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program. Additional services will include free blood pressure screenings, fasting glucose tests (eight-hour fasting required for an accurate reading), risk assessments for breast cancer/heart disease/diabetes/strokes/mental illness, and information about access to affordable health care coverage.

Funding for this event is made possible in part by the Department of Health and Human Services’ office on Women’s Health. The views expressed in written materials or publications and by speakers or moderators at HHS-sponsored conferences do not necessarily reflect the official policies of the Department of Health and Human Services; nor does the mention of trade names, commercial practices or organizations imply endorsement by the United States government.

The Southern Nevada Health District offers regular family planning services at its clinics by appointment. Services include: cervical and breast exams, STD testing for clinic clients, birth control counseling, and pregnancy testing. Services are available at the East Las Vegas Public Health Center and the Henderson Public Health Center. The cost of the exam – including treatment, birth control or medications – is based on a sliding scale determined by annual income and the number of people in the household. It is requested that clients provide proof of their income; however, the health district does not turn away clients due to their inability to pay on the day of the visit.
