Influenza in Southern Nevada

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
January 24, 2012

LAS VEGAS – The Southern Nevada Health District’s respiratory illness surveillance program has confirmed two recent influenza cases in Clark County, a reminder that flu continues to circulate in the community. This year’s flu shot includes the influenza strains currently circulating, including the strains identified in the local cases and the health district is reminding everyone it is not too late to be immunized this flu season. Flu shots are available at the Southern Nevada Health District. For information contact the immunization clinic, (702) 759-0850 or visit www.SNHD.info. Flu shots are $28, and the new high-dose shot for people 65 and older is $53.

The health district has administered more than 10,500 flu shot doses since mid-September. Flu season peaks in January or February and can continue until May. There are no flu shot shortages this year and the vaccine is available throughout the community.

It is recommended that everyone 6 months of age and older get a yearly flu vaccination. The health district encourages everyone to get flu vaccinations, especially persons at high-risk of complications from the flu including children younger than 5 (children younger than 2 years old are at highest risk), adults 65 years of age and older and pregnant women.
