Health District Now Offers H1N1 Vaccine at Fertitta Center

LAS VEGAS –The Southern Nevada Health District continues to offer 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine throughout Southern Nevada. In addition to its four public health centers, the health district now offers the 2009 H1N1 vaccine from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday at the Fertitta Community Assistance Center inside Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, 1501 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Since its emergence in April, the H1N1 influenza strain has been the dominant flu virus seen across the country and in Southern Nevada. To date, there have been more than 3,400 lab-confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza.

It is expected that this influenza strain will be the dominant strain for the upcoming flu season as long as the virus does not change. The virus has not mutated and this year’s shot will offer protection for the upcoming flu season.

Seasonal and H1N1 influenza vaccinations are especially recommended for health care workers, people who live with or care for babies younger than six months old, anyone with a compromised immune system or a chronic medical condition and pregnant women. In addition, younger people were included in the initial priority groups as people younger than 25 are particularly susceptible to becoming more seriously ill when they are infected.

Children between the ages of six months old and age nine should receive the second 2009 H1N1 dose four weeks after the first dose or at least 21-28 days later. Parents should bring their children’s H1N1 vaccine record with them when they are to receive the second dose. The second dose is recommended for children so they develop adequate protection against the 2009 H1N1 influenza strain. By getting vaccinated now, people can be protected themselves and their families against the strain when it returns in the fall.

The 2009 H1N1 vaccine is available at all Southern Nevada Health District public health centers Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Additional community clinics are scheduled as follows:
