Health District to hold open house at

Henderson Public Health Center, Oct. 31 ‘Prevention doesn’t have to be spooky’

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
October 30, 2006

LAS VEGAS – October 30, 2006 – The Southern Nevada Health District will host an open house at its newest public health center in Henderson between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 31. The health district will offer a unique twist to the Halloween holiday with the theme “prevention doesn’t have to be spooky.” The open house will offer visitors an opportunity to learn about services offered by the new facility, as well as those provided by the Southern Nevada Health District overall. The Henderson Public Health Center relocated to its new 26,000 square-foot facility at 520 E. Lake Mead Parkway in September.

“Although we are using a fun Halloween theme, we want to let our neighbors know that they can easily prevent illnesses, prepare for disasters, and learn about nutrition in a very relaxed and non-threatening environment. Prevention isn’t spooky,” said Bonnie Sorenson, the health district’s director of nursing. “We also want to show off our new public health center and let our clients know what we offer here every day.”

Several health district divisions will be on hand to provide information and answer questions about public health preparedness, health education and disease prevention. In addition, there will be free vision screening for children and eyeglass repairs for seniors, information about antibiotic and drug interactions, and representatives from State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) Medicare Counseling and the Governor’s Office for Consumer Health Assistance will be on hand to answer questions. The event is sponsored by the National Alliance for Hispanic Health. Visitors can vote for the “best costume,” and the “best exhibitor table.”

The Henderson public health center is the health district’s largest satellite facility. The new center provides well-baby check ups, family planning and women’s health care services, immunizations and flu shots, day care physicals and sports physicals, and health promotion and environmental health programs. The Henderson public health center is open Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. -4:30 p.m. For more information, call (702) 759-1040 or visit www.southernnevadahealthdistrict.org.
