Health District to Offer Extended Hours for Back-to-School Immunizations

Parents Encouraged to Bring Immunizations Up-To-Date

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
July 24, 2006

LAS VEGAS – The Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) is currently offering back-to-school immunizations at its four public health centers – East Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson and its main location at 625 Shadow Lane. From Monday, Aug. 21 through Friday, Sept. 1, the District will hold immunization clinics between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at its Shadow Lane campus. In addition, SNHD will provide back-to-school immunizations between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 5 and Saturday, Aug. 26 at the Shadow Lane location. Parents must bring immunization records; children with no immunization records will have to begin the immunization sequence from the beginning. Most immunizations are free of charge; however, an administrative fee of $16 per patient for one immunization or $20 per patient for two or more immunizations will be collected. For more information, contact the Southern Nevada Health District’s immunization office at (702) 759-0850 or visit www.southernnevadahealthdistrict.org.

“Having children immunized against disease is the most effective way to keep them healthy,” said Bonnie Sorenson, director of nursing. “Children will not be allowed to enroll in school if they do not have the required immunizations, so the Health District will be offering extended hours to meet the school district’s requirements. We want to remind the community that we offer immunizations year-round. So we encourage parents to bring their kids in early to avoid long waits,” she added.

The Clark County School District requires the following vaccinations for students enrolling in public or private school: chickenpox (varicella); hepatitis A; hepatitis B; polio; diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP); and measles, mumps, rubella (MMR). Parents who have recently moved to Nevada should note the chickenpox and hepatitis A vaccinations are not required in all states, so immunizations that were up-to-date in other states may not be current in Nevada.

Immunizations are also available at each of the Southern Nevada Health District’s satellite public health centers. For locations, hours and dates, call the health district immunization project at (702) 759-0850.

The Southern Nevada Health District will also conduct immunization clinics at locations throughout the valley. Parents are asked to bring a copy of their child’s immunization records.
