Salud en Acción Offers Medicare Assistance to Spanish Speaking Seniors

Program offers counseling in Spanish on new Medicare prescription drug coverage mailing

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
June 7, 2005

(Las Vegas, Nev., – June 7, 2005) – The health district Salud En Acción (Health in Action) program is offering assistance to Spanish speaking seniors who may qualify for a new Medicare prescription drug benefit. The U.S. Social Security Administration is currently mailing application information to low-income seniors. The application materials verify eligibility and formally enroll seniors to receive the benefit, beginning in January 2006.

In cooperation with the National Alliance for Hispanic Health, La Promesa, Salud en Acción is conducting Medicare benefits counseling to ensure local Spanish speaking seniors receive all of the benefits for which they are eligible. Face-to-face counseling on application forms, income and resource guidelines and levels of assistance is available by appointment at (702) 386-8554.

“Access to prescription medicine is a critical part of healthy aging,” said Rosanna Silva-Minnich, program coordinator for Salud en Acción. “The availability of face-to-face Spanish counseling helps ensure that language is not a barrier to receiving Medicare prescription assistance,” said Silva-Minnich.
