According to a 2002 Community Health Survey, roughly 8 percent of Clark County adults have been diagnosed with diabetes. Many more remain undiagnosed. On average, 29 percent of adults with diabetes do not know they have the disease. In addition, diabetes is a growing epidemic in people of Native American, African American and Hispanic descent.

High levels of glucose can cause serious health conditions including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-limb (primarily foot) amputations. Diabetes is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. However, with early detection and lifestyle interventions, the disease can be effectively managed.
