  • Only pregnant female mosquitoes bite – they need the protein from blood to help develop their eggs.
  • Mosquitoes are attracted to people by skin odors and carbon dioxide from breath.
  • With some species, it only takes seven days for a mosquito egg to hatch and become an adult mosquito. Other species take one to three weeks.
  • There are 17 species of mosquitoes in Southern Nevada. Of those, 13 species will bite birds and humans.
  • Mosquitoes live four to eight weeks.
  • Mosquitoes bite in the early morning and early evening hours; however, two hours after the sun sets is when they bite the most.
  • Mosquito eggs grow in standing water.
