Treatment

Currently, there is no vaccine to protect against chikungunya virus and there are no antiviral treatments. To decrease the symptoms and reduce fever and pain, medications such as ibuprofen, naproxen, acetaminophen or paracetamol can be used. Check with a healthcare provider if there are any questions.

Treatment is mostly supportive and also includes plenty of rest and fluids to prevent dehydration.

Most patients feel better within a week. In some people, the joint pain may persist for months. Once a person has been infected, he or she is likely to be protected from future infections.
