Outbreak Investigation Procedures
When reports of illness come in, Health District staff take immediate action to protect the health of Clark County residents and visitors.
Reports of illness come from three main sources:
- The public can report their illness directly to the Health District by using our illness reporting line (702) 759-1300 or through our online reporting form.
- Healthcare professionals who diagnose a reportable disease are required by law to notify Health District staff
- Other jurisdictions who identify an ill person who may have been exposed in or have contact in Southern Nevada will notify the Health District with the information.
Once received, Health District staff review each complaint for trends and patterns. Staff may also conduct phone interviews to gather details about food consumption, locations visited, and close contacts who may also be at risk.
If multiple reports indicate a common location or event, Health District staff will conduct an environmental assessment at the site. The assessment will help identify any potential routes of illness transmission at that location and collaborate with the facility to implement corrective actions to prevent additional illness transmission. Depending on the findings and severity of the outbreak, the Health District may continue monitoring the situation and provide the facility with further guidance. If necessary, facilities with Health permits may be temporarily closed to stop the spread of illness.
The Health District is dedicated to working closely with the community and facility managers to quickly identify, control, and prevent the spread of illness.
In the event of an outbreak, the Southern Nevada Health District will work with your business to identify appropriate corrective actions and precautions to end the outbreak quickly.
If you suspect that you might be experiencing an outbreak at your property, please reach out to the Health District immediately. The sooner we know about it, the sooner we can work together to help end it. You can call the Office of Epidemiology at (702) 759-1300 at any time, Environmental Health Foodborne Illness at (702) 759-1504, or your assigned inspector during business hours.
