Health District offers reproductive health services for men

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
September 14, 2015

LAS VEGAS –The Southern Nevada Health District will offer young men an opportunity to receive reproductive health services at its Men’s Health Center located inside its East Las Vegas Public Health Center, 560 N. Nellis Blvd. The center will open Tuesday, Sept. 15. The Men’s Health Center will offer services by appointment each Tuesday and Thursday.  Clients can call (702) 759-0900 to make an appointment or for more information. All services are confidential and will be offered on a sliding fee scale based on income.

Services include a basic health assessment and nursing staff will provide counseling and education regarding family planning, reproductive health, risk factors for STDs/HIV and safe sexual practices. STD testing and treatment would be available, if necessary, and appropriate referrals for additional health care services will be provided.

“Many young men have questions regarding their sexual health or don’t have a full understanding of their role in preventing unplanned pregnancies. This center will be a place where they can be comfortable asking questions, getting information, and testing if necessary,” said Karen Atkins, Southern Nevada Health District community health nurse manager. “We hope that when young men leave the center, they will be more informed and better able to discuss sexual health issues, birth control and family planning with their partners.”

The health district also provides low-cost family planning services for women at the East Las Vegas Public Health Center that include a health assessment, pap smears (depending upon age), birth control, STD screenings and treatment as needed, pregnancy testing, emergency contraception, referrals, and counseling. Appointments are not necessary for pregnancy testing and emergency contraception services. The clinic is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. To make an appointment at the East Las Vegas Family Planning Clinic, call (702) 759-0900. The Henderson Public Health Center, 520 E. Lake Mead Parkway offers pregnancy testing and emergency contraception on a walk-in basis and birth control refills for established patients by appointment. To schedule an appointment at the Henderson clinic, (702) 759-1040.

The health district’s Sexual Health Clinic offers STD screenings and treatment, if necessary. The Sexual Health Clinic also provides physician referrals, condoms, risk behavior counseling and partner notification so treatment can begin quickly. In addition, HIV screenings are also available. The Sexual Health Clinic is open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., 400 Shadow Lane, Suite 106, (702) 759-0702.
