Prevention

The same actions to prevent other mosquito borne illness such as West Nile virus disease are effective for preventing chikungunya. While traveling in areas where mosquito-borne diseases are present:

  • Use EPA approved repellents such as DEET.
  • Wear comfortable clothing that protects skin from mosquito bites.
  • Select hotels or other residences with intact window and door screens.
  • Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants. At home, reduce the risk of mosquito bites by eliminating standing water sources, maintaining swimming pools, repairing leaky plumbing, emptying wading pools and storing them upside down.
