National Public Health Week
Designing Healthy Communities: Raising Healthy Kids

The first week of April was proclaimed National Public Health Week by President Clinton in 1995. The focus this year is on children and the built environment. Each day we will focus on an aspect of children's health and the built environment:

Kid playing on playground

Tuesday: Surrounding Our Kids with Equal Opportunities

  • Access to primary and preventative health care
  • Quality housing
  • Healthy eating choices from neighborhood grocery stores

Wednesday: Surrounding Our Kids with Physical Activity

  • Communities with safe, clean places to play, like parks and community centers, help ensure kids get moving.

Thursday: Surrounding Our Kids with Safety

  • Communities with pedestrian-friendly walkways and bike paths allow kids to safely travel to and from school.

Friday: Surrounding Our Kids with Clean Air

  • Communities that encourage carpooling and discourage smoking in areas frequented by children help keep kids breathing easily.
