Southern Nevada Health District Updates
Public Accommodation Regulations to Address Dry Camping

LAS VEGAS – July 27, 2006 – The Southern Nevada Health District Board of Health passed a new section of regulations governing self-contained recreational vehicle dry camping facilities that will be added to the existing Regulations Governing the Sanitation and Safety of Public Accommodation Facilities.

These new regulations were developed in collaboration with stakeholders, including resort properties, resort associations and members of the public, and are designed to ensure visitors who use dry camping facilities are provided with accommodations that meet existing public health, safety and environmental health standards.

“The adoption of this new section of regulations will help to make certain visitors using dry camping facilities in Southern Nevada will have a healthy and enjoyable stay,” said Dr. Donald Kwalick, chief health officer of the Southern Nevada Health District.

These regulations specifically address the improved sanitary capabilities of the newer models of self-contained recreational vehicles and provide public health guidelines for licensed public accommodation facilities to address issues including: sources of potable water; location of sanitary stations, disposal of solid waste; back up restroom facilities; and adequate parking space and grounds maintenance.

“Recreational vehicle users have been enjoying the facilities and amenities offered in Southern Nevada for many years and they can expect to see the same quality of service. However, they now have the added assurance that the facilities available to them are designed to meet their needs and ensure their public health and safety,” said Glenn Savage, director of environmental health for the health district.

The regulations will be forwarded to the State Board of Health for approval. The public accommodation regulations may be accessed on the health district website at www.southernnevadahealthdistrict.org.
