The Southern Nevada Health District conducts surveillance of communicable diseases in Clark County, investigates case reports and communicable disease outbreaks and implements control measures designed to curb the spread of disease.
Surveillance Programs Include:
Electronic Syndromic Surveillance: This program is designed to identify potential communicable disease outbreaks including those that could be caused by bioterrorist agents.
Influenza-Like Illness Surveillance Program: This is a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) program with local hospitals, physicians, and clinics serving as sentinel sites. The program monitors the percentage of patients seen by health care professions who meet the criteria for inclusion as a case of influenza-like illness.
First Watch: This new system uses real-time information culled from 9-1-1 calls to detect trends indicating the possible outbreak of disease, illness or patterns of injury either from natural causes or acts of terrorism.
