Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program

If you are a carrier, or have an active infection, of hepatitis B you could pass it to your child at birth. Without treatment your child could become infected with hepatitis B, which causes cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure and death.

The Southern Nevada Health District's (SNHD) Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program works with mothers to help keep them, their babies and their families healthy.

Our services include:

  • Follow-up to ensure your baby receives one dose of hepatitis B immune Globulin (HBIG) at birth and all three hepatitis B vaccines.
  • Testing of all household contacts to find out if they are infected with or carry Hepatitis B Virus (HBV)
  • Hepatitis B vaccine to all household contacts who are negative for HBV.
  • Free blood test and vaccine from the SNHD.
  • Free blood test for your baby, after HBIG and three doses of vaccine are complete (9-15 months of age), to ensure the vaccine is protecting your child.
  • Ensuring your child's primary providers follow the recommended schedule for administration of the Hepatitis B Vaccine.

If you are pregnant and tested positive for hepatitis B or want additional information on the Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program, please call us at (702) 759-0858.
