Mosquito Control
Despite popular belief, there are mosquitoes in Southern Nevada.
In fact, over 25,793 mosquitoes were trapped in Clark County, Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, Mesquite and surrounding areas in 2006.
The Southern Nevada Health District’s Environmental Health Division works to reduce mosquito populations and control the spread of mosquito-borne disease.
The objectives of the mosquito control program are to:
- Abate existing mosquito breeding sources
- Prevent new mosquito breeding sources in order to permit full use and enjoyment of our backyards and our many recreational facilities
- Permit mosquito-free agricultural and industrial working conditions
- Protect public health and comfort
By keeping the mosquito populations down in Southern Nevada we reduce the spread of mosquito-borne diseases such as:
Seventeen species of mosquitoes call Southern Nevada home. In order to breed, mosquitoes need a water source. By reducing the number of breeding sources, we can reduce the number of mosquitoes and cases of mosquito-borne disease.
Mosquito control is a community effort. Keeping your home free of mosquito breeding sites and by reporting stagnant water and green swimming pools to the health district, you can do your part in reducing mosquitoes and mosquito-borne disease in Southern Nevada.
