Chronic Disease
The Chronic Disease Prevention Program encourages and supports individuals and community efforts to adopt healthy behaviors, lifestyles and environments.
Improper nutrition, physical inactivity and tobacco use are directly related to the onset or aggravation of a number of chronic diseases including:
- Arthritis
- Asthma
- Cancer
- Cardiovascular diseases
- Diabetes
- Obesity
Our chronic disease prevention programs focus on addressing these three modifiable risk factors and serve as the cornerstone of our efforts to prevent the incidence of chronic diseases and enhance the quality of life of those currently living with chronic conditions.
Injury Prevention
The mission of the Injury Prevention Program is to promote public health prevention approaches to reduce morbidity (disease), mortality (death), and risk behaviors related to unintentional and intentional injuries.
Unintentional injury is the leading cause of death in Nevada and Clark County for all age categories from five through 44. Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional injury death in Clark County for children four years of age and under.
The leading cause of intentional injury death in Nevada and Clark County is suicide. Nevada is one of only three states that have more deaths from suicide than motor vehicle crashes.
Tobacco Control
The Southern Nevada Health District Tobacco Control Program has four major goals:
- Prevent youth initiation of smoking
- Promote cessation among youth and adults
- Eliminate secondhand smoke exposure
- Eliminate health disparities among diverse populations
The health district tobacco control program works to raise awareness utilizing counter-marketing strategies, community initiatives, school and youth-based programs, surveys, and support local coalitions and community groups that address tobacco issues.
