Mumps Outbreak
Through May 17, 2006, the Iowa Department of Public Health has reported a total of 1,327 confirmed cases of mumps; Iowa typically reports about 5 cases of mumps each year.
The states of Minnesota, Kansas, Illinois, Nebraska, Wisconsin, and Missouri have reported a total of 1,237 confirmed cases, and several other states are investigating possible cases.
Outlook for Southern Nevada
As a tourist destination with about 40 million visitors a year, potential exposure of visitors and residents to mumps is high. No outbreak-associated cases have been reported in local residents; however, surveillance is ongoing to identify cases as rapidly as possible.
From 2001 through 2005 there have been 11 reported cases of mumps in Clark County. Visit the Mumps webpage to learn more about mumps symptoms, treatment and prevention.
