Let Others In On The Plan |

There's more to disaster preparedness than having critical supplies on hand. For total readiness, begin with these simple steps:
- Designate two meeting points for all family members:
- One outside your home, in case of fire
- One outside your neighborhood in case you can't go home
- Choose both a local and out-of-state contact for family members to call
|
- Make sure everyone know where emergency numbers are posted
- Install smoke detectors on each level of your home and check the batteries twice a year
- Contact the fire department to learn about fire safety
- Learn first aid and CPR - the American Red Cross can teach you how
- Practice your family disaster plan
- Be prepared for the special needs of children, the elderly or disabled persons
- Work with your neighbors to develop a complete neighborhood plan - know which neighbors have special needs, which have special medical skills and designate childcare in case parents can't make it home
